Description
It is an ashur khanah, literally “House of the tenth Muharram,” Shia shrine containing alam, copies of the flag carried by Imam Husain, maternal grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Named after the Nizam Osman Ali Khan’s mother Zahra Begum, (d. 1941) located in Darusshifa area on the south bank of Musi, Aazah Khana-i Zahra was designed and built under the direction of engineer-architect Zain Yar Jang (d. 1961). The Aazah Khanah is a large hall, for male mourners with a high, 45 feet ceiling without pillars. Women mourners are accommodated in the surrounding gallery, with carved, perforated screens in arches. Onion-shaped domes, pointed arches, large rectangular kiosks with domed chhatries (cupolas) decorate the corners of the parapet.
