Description
Engraving with depictions of several balloons used in historically important ascents and the mechanics of various methods of balloon inflation and steering or propelling components. Pictured clockwise from top left: Vincent Lunardi's first British ascent from the Artillery grounds on September 14, 1784, Johann Karl Enslen's Pegasus-shaped balloon launch, Blanchard and Jeffries' cross-Channel journey on January 7, 1785, Lunardi's second ascent on May 13, 1785 and the Montgolfier brothers' balloon. In the center is a representation of Thomas Baldwin's aeriel view of Chester from Lunardi's balloon.
