1784Description
Political cartoon satirizing the 1783 coalition of Charles Fox and Lord Frederick North. The engraving depicts an English pantomime in which Harlequin (Fox) and Pantaloon (North) are performing. Fox holds a sword over a bust of King George III which is on a rectangular pedestal decorated with the royal arms. He is standing on a document and secretly passing a paper labeled "Prerogative" to North. Above the bust a crown and sceptre are suspended, attached to a small balloon. On the back wall of the stage is a portrait of Cromwell and on the side wall is a map of the "Independent States of America." Audience members [likely also specific political figures] are cheering "Bravo" and "Encore."
