18th century engraving of the "Air-Ship" proposed by Francesco Lana Terzi (1631-1687) in his 1670 "Prodromo." The design features a boat attached to a sail, lifted by air pumped from four thin evacuated copper globes. Three men are in the ship, one carries an oar with which to steer.
