Overall view with painted frame; This large composition (cat. Rais. 1, III, No. 23) is one of three paintings by Picasso done during his stay in Rome (17 March to end of April 1917). It notes the collage aesthetic, similar to the one practiced especially by Juan Gris. It is also characterized by a decorative dimension, probably induced by the atmosphere of the collaboration with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes on the "Parade" sets (one of four ballet productions with Picasso as set designer).
