Gueliz, the "New Town" or European portion of Marrakech built during the colonial era takes is name from this building, "Gueliz" being a corruption of the French word "église," or "church." It was built in 1928 and named in honor of 5 Franciscan Monks beheaded for trying to convert Muslims in the 13th century. It is red like most of the city, with green roof tiles.
