View of Great Hall with totem poles, facing out towards glass facade; Admirably related to its site is the Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver (1971-1976), where the Northwest Coast post-and-beam structure [of First Nations people] is adapted into an expanding series of flat arches enclosed by glass walls. Visitors enter through a lower portal and descend, rather than ascend as is customary in museums, past successively larger display bays advancing towards the magnificent panorama of the Strait of Georgia, thereby participating in an interaction that is visual and also allegorical in its suggestion of descent through valleys to the sea.
