Close side view of lower west facade; The cathedral shows the style of Juan de Herrera (Estilo desornamentado) and is one of the most beautiful in the country. Francisco Becerra, who was active on a number of Puebla’s churches, worked on the cathedral. In 1575 he became maestro mayor for Puebla Cathedral, assisted by Francisco Gutiérrez Cabello. By his own account his activity on this assignment lasted for five years and probably included the design and laying of the foundations; however, the plan was amended after 1585. Construction began in 1575, and it was completed in the 18th century under Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza. Especially noteworthy are the altarpiece and baldacchino (1797-1818) by Manuel Tolsá and José Manzo, the Capilla de los Reyes, and the sacristy, with 17th-century paintings.
