dc.description | Attic level on Nevsky Prospect, showing the left lateral bronze ship prow (rostrum) topped with allegorical figure; Syuzor's earlier buildings are noted for facades which "are the ultimate achievement in 19th-century stuccoed eclecticism in St Petersburg." In 1902-1904 he built the Singer company building on Nevsky Prospect. With its use of stone, metal and sculptures by Amandus Adamson on the main façades, the glass tower and the innovative structural solutions, this building is among the outstanding achievements of Art Nouveau architecture. [The building was the Russian headquarters of the Singer sewing machine company, and became a bookstore after the Revolution in 1919--the first bookshop in Soviet Russia.] Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 1/15/2009) | en_US |
