Description
193 Longmarket Street, Bo-Kaap, Cape Town. Established in 1884 as Pilgrim Mosque. Its wooden minaret was the first minaret to be constructed on a mosque in Cape Town. When it blew down during a storm in the late 1930s and was replaced by a concrete structure, it was decided to renovate and expand the entire mosque in the post-WWII years. The name was changed to Mosque Boorhaanol Islam in 1949 then to its current name in 1970. The mosque has been declared a national monument.
