dc.description | Fireplace area; Principal interiors from the Glasgow home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh (1864-1933). The couple lived at 78 Southpark Avenue (originally named 6 Florentine Terrace) from 1906 to 1914. Substantial alterations were made in 1906 as Mackintosh remodeled the proportions and natural lighting of the Victorian end-of-terrace house. The house and all the original furniture was purchased by the University of Glasgow in 1946. The house was demolished but the principal rooms have been carefully reconstructed at the Hunterian Museum, completed 1981. These photographs (taken ca. 1910) were part of the Dr. Thomas Howarth collection, sold at Christies, Feb. 17, 1994. "Thomas Howarth, professor, architectural historian, collector (b in England 1914, d at Toronto 21 July 2000). Howarth reawakened interest in the great Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928), through articles, a comprehensive monograph, exhibitions, and lifelong advocacy and collecting. A prescient collector of Mackintosh's work, Howarth amassed a huge and varied collection." Source: Canadian Encyclopedia; http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/ (accessed 7/17/2010) | en_US |
