Al-Madrasa al-Thahiriyya was originally a residential home that was transformed to a madrasa in 1279 after the death of King al-Thaher. The king was buried in an elaborate turbeh with a high dome in the southwest corner of the building. The madrasa is rich with various methods of ornamentation. The main entrance gate is semi-domed with stone muqarnas. The interior wall cladding materials include glass and marble fusayfus'a, colored marble, carved stone and carved gold gilded wood. The mihrab in the turbeh is made of colored marble to allude to patterns and mosaics typical of the Mamluk architectural style. interior, detail of mausoleum mosaic showing architectural representation
