Description
The recent 23-piece work, ''Pregnant,'' for example, consisting of two big, gravid-looking pods attended by smaller seedlike striplings, all made of branches bound with wire, relates to earlier pieces that Abakanowicz did. They were big heads, packed to the point of splitting open, and reflecting her belief that in this overwrought era we humans are, so to speak, breaching our biological contract. The pregnant pods speak of the link between higher development, exemplified by the human forms, and the basic laws of nature we must obey to keep the planet going.
