The Observatory's rings are moss-covered earthen mound walls. The outer one has two opposite openings that are triangular and square and is topped by three V-shaped markers. The inner ring is lined with a stockage of slightly irregular cedar planks, a natural but processed material, which is also used to reinforce all the openings cut through the mounds. The alignment between the two rings' openings and the outer ring's elevated Vs is complex."This work then links the very new genre of monumental sculpture with ancient monuments that were aligned to planetary movements and seasonal cycles of nature and were the sites of ritual ceremonies. The gound covering is a rich green grassy moss..." -- From Boettger, Suzaan. Earthworks: Art and Landscape of the Sixties, Berkeley, University of California Press, 2002 p.228-229. aerial view
