One of nineteen cartoons made for tapestries to decorate the quarters of the Princes of Asturias in the Palace of El Pardo. In July 1773 Goya had married Josefa Bayeu in Madrid but had continued to work in Saragossa; late in 1774, however, he was called to Madrid to paint for the Real Fábrica de Tapices de Santa Bárbara. Under Francisco Bayeu’s direction, he produced large oil-on-canvas cartoons from which tapestries destined for the royal palaces could be made. Between 1774 and June 1792 Goya submitted 63 cartoons. Goya’s early ‘extraordinary’ facility in painting tapestry cartoons astonished the Neo-classical painter Anton Raphael Mengs. Goya exercised greater compositional invention and showed increasing confidence in design and colour in the genre scenes he painted from 1776 for the Palacio del Pardo tapestries. (PRISCILLA E.
