Although Lemoyne’s contemporaries believed they could detect the influence on his subsequent work of Veronese and Parmigianino and of Michelangelo and Pietro da Cortona, Watelet noted that this brief stay came too late in Lemoyne’s career to result in any real change of style. It was in Italy that he painted Hercules and Omphale (Paris, Louvre) and the first version of The Bather (Dallas, TX, priv. col.), which was begun in Bologna, continued in Venice and finished in Rome. Both these paintings were acquired by Berger. (MARIANNE ROLAND MICHEL: 'Lemoyne, François', The Grove Dictionary of Art Online, ed. L.
