dc.description | installation at Marine Transfer Station, Department of Sanitation, New York, NY
Glass bridge installation"As the Artist-in-Residence for the New York City Department of Sanitation, a position she has held since the mid-1970s, Ukeles has created a major installation called Flow City.
There is perhaps no greater mythology of the everyday than that of the endless array of disposable commodities in our homes and the presumed lack of consequences for the garbage we create domestically and publicly. Flow City calls our attention to the vast amounts of waste that accumulate as we deplete the resources of the earth. And perhaps most subtly, Ukeles calls attention to the way we, as those who create the waste in our homes and domestic habits, are prone to see the garbage dilemma: with casual indifference." -- From http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/arthist/ahgsa/2001_abstracts.htm (accessed 10-14/03) | en_US |
