Patssi Valdez was the "Virgen de Guadalupe-in-black," Willie Herron was "the mural that walked against the ugliness of urban street life," and Gronk was "the inverted Xmas tree in three green chiffon dresses" on Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, in one of Asco's first street performances in 1972. "Our look was incredibly stylized," Gamboa recalls. "Our credo was 'If you can walk, wear it,'" Asco's "No-movies" were scenes created to resemble stills from a movie ("projecting the real while rejecting the reel," said Gamboa). Their goal was to confront people with Chicano life and its importance to the city, and to give a public voice to Chicano artists in unexpected ways (High Performance, no. 35, 1986, p. 51)en_US
