Traité élémentaire de géométrie à quatre dimensions
Description
E. Jouffret published Traité élémentaire de géométrie à quatre dimensions in 1903. There are four central conceptual models in Duchamp's mathematical notes that are very similar to the ones found in Jouffret's books:
the concept of a "section," in which an n-dimentional [fourth dimensional] spaces is intersected by an n - 1 dimensional space.
the concept of "parallélisme élémentaire," in which an n-dimensional space is displayed along an axis to generate an n +1 dimensional space
the concept of "rotation," in which an n-dimensional space is roted around an axis to generate an n +1 dimensional space
and the concept of "projection," in which an n-dimensional configuration is projected onto an n-1 dimensional configuration.
In addition to these, Duchamp's concept of "infra-mince" is apparently derived from Jouffret's discussions on the "sections" that exist between continua of different dimension. -- from Adcock, Craig E.
