Description
Cartoon showing six scenes in a circle illustrating "the Overstone Cycle of Trade," created as an illustration to accompany Lord Overstone's "The Overstone Theory of Trade [a review]" (1859). The title is printed in the center of the circle below an image of a man holding a nearly empty sack labeled "2 per cent" and above the man holding a full sack labeled "10 percent." Other scenes include (clockwise from top center) "Prosperity," with an image of a family eating a large meal served by a servant; "Excitement," showing building construction and a large observatory platform supported by balloons; "Convulsion," depicting an explosion in the "Royal Bubble Bank"; "Stagnation," with people begging for work on the street; "Improvement," accompanied by an image of a factory with workers entering; "Confidence" showing ships and trains carrying cargo.
