Description
Etching showing by Jean Pierre Blanchard's first ascent in England, made from Lochée's Military Academy in Chelsea on October 16, 1783 with anatomist and flight patron Dr. John Sheldon. Two small pilot balloons are nearby and a crowd of people is gathered on rooftops to view the ascent. The aeronauts wave flags from the car of the balloon. Scientific instruments have been thrown from the car to lighten the load carried by the balloon. A caption beneath the illustration details the event.
