Detail, feet and skirt with hoop, painted to look collaged on canvas; In front of a fireplace topped with a mirror, Picasso portrays a young girl with hoop and stick. It was painted in March 1919, just when the exhibition "Braque" was held at Léonce Rosenberg gallery and where some critics were proclaiming the death of Cubism. Yet, composed of bits and pieces, the girl looks like a collage. Picasso uses sand and effects of trompe l'oeil (the hoop appears to be cut out of paper), and the face-mask is seen both in front and in profile. The character of the girl may have stemmed from the ballet production "Parade", for which Picasso designed sets.
