Overall view without frame; The oil painting has a large piece of painted wood (the 'lighthouse') attached, and a folded paper "boat" and wood match sticks collaged to the surface. A few years prior to this painting, Tanguy had spent two years in the Merchant Navy. In December 1925, Tanguy joined the Surrealist movement, together with Prévert and Duhamel, a decision that had a powerful and irreversible effect on his painting.
