Date
1882-1906Description
View from right side, one of Ugolino's sons, with plaster draping at base; Enlargement with the addition of draping, done in 1906, from the plaster group of 1882, part of the studies for the Gates of Hell. Ugolino, sitting, appears in the final model for the Gates. Rodin created many versions of this theme in plaster and in bronze. Theme taken from the Divine Comedy by Dante in which the imprisoned, hunger-crazed, Ugolino, Count of Gheradesca, devoured his dead children, a crime for which he was eternally damned.
