Description
Detail, Triton with Shells (1915-1916), side view; Saarinen designed this three-tiered basin before he built the Cranbrook Art Museum and Library. (The pools lie to the south of the museum). The Triton Pools are a rearranged version of the Europa Fountain in Halmstad, Sweden. It features multiple bronze sculptures, all designed by Carl Milles. The Europa and the Bull sculpture stands at the head of the basins, which are filled with four Triton figures, designed 1915-1916. Additional Tritons and a Mermaid were added in 1925-1927.
