| dc.description | Walkway in central quadrangle looking at east wing containing Serra Chapel; A Spanish mission in colonial Las Californias. Its ruins are located in present-day San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. It contains the oldest building in California still in use, a 35 m long chapel (Serra Chapel) built in 1782 (enlarged 1922). It is the only extant structure where it has been documented that the padre Junipero Serra celebrated mass. Work was begun on "The Great Stone Church" (the only chapel building in Alta California not constructed out of adobe; it was sandstone) on February 2, 1797. The builder was maestro albañil (master stonemason) Isídro Aguilár of Culiacán. This was destroyed in an earthquake in 1812; part of the sacristy still stands. The Mission complex contained a hospital, living quarters, kitchens (pozolera), workshops, storerooms and soldiers' barracks (cuartels). It suffered a long period of decay beginning in 1827. The first conservation efforts began in 1895. Father St. John O'Sullivan did the most to rebuild the mission in his tenure (1910-1933). Since then the Mission has received landmark status.
