Trumbull College Master's House (by James Gamble Rogers, 1930); Yale University is a private Ivy League research university. Founded in 1701 in Saybrook Colony as the Collegiate School, the university is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. In 1718, the school was renamed Yale College. Much of the architecture of the central campus is 20th century Collegiate Gothic. The central campus in downtown New Haven covers 260 acres.
