Description
Motorbike and storefronts, with produce cart out front; The city and its fortress has been ruled under several historic northern Indian kingdoms. From the Tomars in the 13th century, it was passed on to the Mughals, then to the Marathas (1754) and finally the Scindias in 18th century. There are several historic monuments from these periods. Post independence, Gwalior has emerged as an important tourist attraction in central India as well as supporting many industries and administrative offices within the city. Before the end of the 20th century it became a 1.9 million agglomeration and now it is a metropolitan city in central India. A 2014 report of the World Health Organization found Gwalior to be the third-most air polluted city in the world. (Delhi was the worst).
