Traffic on small road into Orchha, Jeep-type car, bus and pedestrian; Orchha (or Urchha) is a town in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh state. The town was established by Rudra Pratap Singh some time after 1501. The Bundella Rajputs, who became vassals of the Mughals during Akbar’s reign, built a series of palaces and other monuments at Orchha. Many of the buildings date to the time of Jahangir and were built by Raja Bir Singh. Additions continued until the 18th century. As of 2001 India census, modern Orchha had a population of 8501.
