dc.description | Museum interior; Hall of Antiquities (Antiquarium, remodeled 1586-1600 by Friedrich Sustris); The former royal palace of the Bavarian monarchs of the House of Wittelsbach, the Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany. The complex of buildings contains ten courtyards and displays 130 rooms. The Residenz Museum is within the wing known as the Alte Residenz. The Alte Residenz features the 66 m long Hall of Antiquities (Antiquarium). It was remodelled into a banqueting hall by Friedrich Sustris in 1586-1600; the low hall was covered with a barrel vault that had 17 window lunettes. The paintings are by Peter Candid, Antonio Ponzano, and Hans Thonauer the Elder, though some were initially designed by Sustris himself. The Ancestral Gallery (Ahnengallerie; 1726-1731) along with the Porcelain Cabinet (both constructed by Joseph Effner) are examples of the court Rococo style. The Residenz, heavily damaged in World War II, had been rebuilt by 1985. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 8/5/2015) | en_US |
