| dc.description | Information label about L'Enfer (Hell) with period picture of interior with plaster figures on ceiling; A scale model, part of the Paris on Stage: 1889-1914 exhibition held June 19, 2013 to February 23, 2014. The cafe or cabaret L'Enfer (Hell) once stood at No. 54 Boulevard de Clichy, along with another called Le Ciel (Heaven), in the Pigalle neighborhood. Both cabarets were a result of a rising trend in Paris ca. 1885-1889 for themed establishments. At L'Enfer the waiters dressed as "red imps" and the doorman dressed as Satan or Mephisto. While the original bohemians stopped patronizing these in the 1890s, they continued to cater to tourists. Cabaret de l’Enfer remained open until 1952. | en_US |
