dc.description | Garden court in center of museum surrounded by arcade; An example of Pueblo Revival Style architecture, and one of Santa Fe's best-known representations of the synthesis of Native American and Spanish Colonial design styles. The inspiration for the building was Mission San Esteban Rey (ca. 1641) at Acoma Pueblo. The museum mimics traditional adobe using modern kiln-fired brick and steel girders covered with cement (mixed with sand and plaster) with a final color coating of stucco. Typical attributes include rounded corners, irregular parapets, and thick, battered walls used to simulate adobe. Roofs are always flat, and a common feature is the use of wooden roof beams that are often decorative rather than supportive.
