Description
Detail of family group; Adriaen van de Velde did not follow in the footsteps of his father and brother, the celebrated marine painters Willem van de Velde i and II, but specialized in landscapes and cattle paintings. With great precision, Adriaen has here portrayed a family in a hilly forest landscape, lavishing attention on their costly clothing. Their identity is not known, but they will certainly have commissioned this painting. Source: Rijksmuseum [website]; www.rijksmuseum.nl/en (accessed 7/13/2014)
