Picasso had been hired by Sergei Diaghilev to create sets for the Ballets Russes in 1917; while in Italy to create the sets, he met Olga Kokhlova, one of the dancers of the troupe. This work is part of the series of "neo-classical" figures painted in 1920-1921, made from sketches Olga sitting, sewing or reading.
