Description
Detail, clipped boxwood parterres and shaped evergreens laid out in rectangles; A replica of an 18th century seigneurial garden, located behind the Château Ramezay and part of the historic site and museum in Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal). The garden features flowers, fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants in parterres. Claude de Ramezay arrived in Montréal in 1705 as the city’s new governor. There he hired Pierre Couturier, an architect and mason, to build a home on Notre-Dame street. The Ramezay property covered 4,200 m2 and included an orchard, a kitchen garden, and a pleasure garden. The Governor’s Garden was re-created in 2000 by landscape architect Robert Desjardins and now covers only 750 m2. The garden is in the formal French style and is divided into three equal-sized sections: a kitchen garden (potager), an orchard (verger) and a pleasure garden (jardin ornemental).
