Interior, looking down the nave towards the entrance door and organ (1681-1686); Several older churches in Amsterdam, such as Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk, were originally built by Roman Catholics and were converted to Protestantism during the Reformation in 1578. The Westerkerk was one of the first purposely built Protestant churches, built in a late Dutch Renaissance style. (The Noorderkerk and Zuiderkerk preceded the Westerkerk). Today the Westerkerk remains the largest church in the Netherlands that was built for Protestants (length 48 meters). The spire, called the Westertoren ("Western tower"), is the highest church tower in Amsterdam, at 85 meters (279 feet). Rembrandt is buried in the Westerkerk, as are several other painters of note.
