Description
Detail of support beam for balcony on north facade; Structural Engineer, Cadogan Tietz. The building acts as a major gateway to the University on Holloway Road. The Centre is composed of three intersecting volumes with a distinctive presence on the street and unique interior spaces. The building is clad entirely with embossed stainless steel panels, creating a shining and ever-changing surface. Windows are conceived as large geometrical cuts, providing accentuated natural light for the café, galleries and teaching spaces. It includes a state-of-the-art lecture theater, three seminar rooms, IT facilities and a social space for students. Doorways and windows are irregular, even in the lecture rooms. The blinds, essential since large windows from the lecture rooms give directly onto the pavement of Holloway Road, need special guide-wires and pulleys so they descend parallel to the sloping windows.
