Detail, elaborate piercing decoration of the wooden retable; One of the works of the Gemäldegalerie on exhibition at the Bode Museum. Alvise or Luigi Vivarini was the leading Venetian artist before Giovanni Bellini. Like Bellini, he was part of a family dynasty of painters. The upper tier features the Risen Christ surrounded by angels and saints, below the Holy Spirit descends on the Virgin and Apostles, shown with the Pentecostal flame, surrounded by saints (fathers of the church). The Gothic frame of the retable is elaborately carved and pierced. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 7/12/2013)en_US
