dc.description | View from the canal side (Landwehrkanal); The museum collects art pieces, items, documents and literature which relate to the Bauhaus School (1919-1933) and mounts exhibitions. The collection was begun in 1960 in Darmstadt and backed by Walter Gropius and other members of the Bauhaus. Gropius designed a building for a Darmstadt site in 1964, but it was finally executed in Berlin by Alex Cvijanovic, in conjunction with the Berlin architect Hans Bandel. Little remains of the Gropius design except for the characteristic silhouette of the shed roofs. The complex consists of two two-story structures that are each nearly equal and parallel to each other, united by a middle section (H shaped plan) and a ramp.
