dc.description | Performers in traditional dress doing a folkloric dance in front of La Parroquia; The Battle of Puebla took place on 5 May 1862 near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico. The battle ended in a victory for the Mexican Army over the much better equipped and larger occupying French forces. (The victory was temporary, but was notable and a morale booster.) The Mexican victory is celebrated yearly on the fifth of May. Its celebration is regional in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla. It is a day of Mexican heritage celebration; it is not a federal holiday in Mexico. (It is not Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated September 16). This holiday remains very popular in the United States where it is celebrated annually as Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
