Description
Second tier reliefs by Thomas Stuart Burnett: the Duke receiving Queen Victoria at Dalkeith on the occasion of her first visit to Scotland in 1842; Walter Francis Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch [7th Duke of Queensberry] (1806-1884) pursued a political career after graduating from Cambridge in 1827. The allegorical "Virtue" figures on the memorial were executed by William Birnie Rhind RSA (1853-1933). The statue of the Duke by Boehm shows him in the robes of the Order of the Garter, while bronze panels depict incidents from the Buccleuch family history on the third tier and scenes from the life of the 5th Duke himself (second tier). Besides Birnie Rhind, sculptors of the panels include Clark Stanton, Stuart Burnett and D W and W G Stevenson. The plinth was designed by Sir Rowand Anderson.
