dc.description | Pilotis running along East 6th street; building has street-level retail spaces; The Cooper Union's 41 Cooper Square, designed by architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, is the newest addition to the campus. The building, originally known as the New Academic Building, stands on the site where the School of Art Hewitt Building was located. The nine-story academic center houses the Albert Nerken School of Engineering with additional spaces for the humanities, art and architecture departments. There is also an exhibition gallery and auditorium for public programs and retail space on the ground level. It achieved a LEED Platinum rating, the first for an institutional building in New York City. The operable perforated stainless steel skin is offset from the glass but still attached to the main frame. This custom facade by Zahner is densely perforated except in certain rectangular areas, so that the visual effect is a series of rectangles shapes scattered across the surface of the facade. There is a green roof. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 7/11/2012) | en_US |
