Date
1846-1850Description
Facade with two towers facing the Mound, viewed from Prince Street Gardens; Playfair was involved in many Edinburgh buildings but is noted for the Mound with its Greek Revival buildings; to harmonize and yet draw the distinction between the New and Old Town, he closed his Mound vista in 1846 with the Free Church College, whose Gothic exterior, reminiscent of Beverley Minster, is shaped by purely scenographic demands. It is one of the largest centers for postgraduate studies in Theology and Religious Studies in the UK. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.oxfordartonline.com/ (accessed 7/5/2012)
