Overall view, in pavement of the Mound, representation of Calton Hill at right; A cast bronze model of the the city of Edinburgh showing topographical and geological features, historic streets and buildings. It shows the crag and tail formation on which the Old Town was built, running eastwards from the Castle Rock down to Holyrood Abbey and Palace. The foreground is occupied by the 18th century Georgian New Town with the Calton Hill at the extreme upper left. The Old and New Towns were connected by the North Bridge (1763) and the artificially constructed earthen Mound (1781-1830). The model is situated in an open space next to the National Gallery of Scotland on the Mound and was given by the staff of Marks & Spencer to the City of Edinburgh in 1984 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company.
