Description
Detail, rear of the shed-roofed bedroom and center living room tower; The Gainey Conference Center is located on 180 acres (73 ha) in Owatonna, an hour south of the main campus of UST. The Winton Guest House was moved there, 110 miles from its original location in Orono Minn., when the property was sold in order to preserve it. It was moved in 10 sections, and required some restoration in the rebuilding. Gehry was inspired by the still life paintings of Giorgio Morandi; "Morandi was drawing bottles which were essentially one-room buildings and creating villages of bottles. I liked that." He was also inspired by Philip Johnson's comment that the best buildings in history were "one room" buildings. The guest house originally sat next to the Winton House designed by Johnson. The Wintons intended the guest house for their grandchildren, so Gehry felt free to have it exude playfulness.
