Detail of musicians and mourners; The scene represents the ancient Roman rite of the “conclamatio”: the close relations call aloud the name of the deceased (a custom similar to a wake). This piece has been in the inventory of the Antiquities department of the Louvre since 1692. However, this imitation of the Antique is undoubtedly the work of skilled Venetian workshops which illustrated Roman texts to meet the requirements of erudite customers.
