dc.description | Context view of Parvis des Jacobins; The Hôtel d’Olmières (now Hôtel de Jean de Bernuy) was built by Guillaume and Jean Picart (active ca. 1502-1503) in the traditional way, although the façades in the entrance courtyard, by Louis Privat (active ca. 1516-1530), are Renaissance in style; it was the first private house to have a straight staircase. [Grove] It is representative of the Renaissance domestic style and has one of the highest hexagonal stair towers in the city (26.5 meters). Now known by the name of owner Jean Bernuy, one of the richest merchants of Toulouse, who made his fortune from the trade of 'pastel' (blue dye made from woad). Since 1567 the hôtel has been used for schools (having been confiscated in religious wars in 1562). First, the college of Jesuits from 1567 to 1762 , then the Royal College from 1764. It now forms part of the Lycée Pierre de Fermat (named in honor of the famous mathematician in 1957), a secondary school (a high school or college preparatory school). It is located near the monastery and church of the Jacobins. Source: Wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (accessed 5/17/2011) | en_US |
