BC; prosperous Hellenistic city during rule of Eumenes I & Attalids (282-133 BC); bequeathed by Attalus III to Rome 133 BC; to Byzantines after fall of Rome; passed to Ottomans 14th cen.; ruins a "text" of Hellenistic art.
