View of a column, depicting decorative frieze; Phidias is the most famous sculptor of Greek antiquity. His large cult statues were described by Pausanias. Phidias' statue of Zeus at Olympia was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. "For the making of the colossal statue of Zeus, a workshop was erected west of the temple, which survived with various alterations until late Roman times. It measured 14.57 x 32.18 m, and in and around it were found numerous tools, moulds and other materials from the period of the chryselephantine Zeus, obviously used by Pheidias [Phidias] and his assistants."
