Close view of Doric columns, east colonnade; In the Hellenistic period (3rd-1st century BCE) there was no new building in the Altis, although vigorous building activity outside it involved new accommodation for the athletes and spectators at the Games. To the west of the Altis, near the Kladeos, the palaestra was built in the mid-3rd century BCE as a training ground for wrestling, boxing and jumping. It was nearly square (66.35 x 66.75 m), with a peristyle court around which were covered areas. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.groveart.com/ (accessed 12/2/2007)en_US
